Lesson 2: Adam and the Fall

Introduction

God wants to have a personal relationship with you. Think about the creation and thank God for everything He created. Pray a simple prayer of thanksgiving, like, “Thank you God for…”.

Listen to this spiritual song again.

What did God do in your life or through you this week? How did God guide you to obey him? Were you able to share a story from the Bible this week? Rejoice in what God did in and through you.

Adam and the Fall

Genesis 3

Questions

  1. What does this story say?
    • Where was the man when she ate?
    • Why did the man and woman make figs leaves for covering?
    • What did they do when God walked in the garden?
    • What do people do today when they sin?
    • Note: God knew where they were and that they had eaten from the forbidden tree, but He first helped them acknowledge where they were and what they had done. When we sin, we feel shame and guilt, but rather than hide and act like nothing happened, we need to confess our sin to God.
    • How did God punish the serpent? The woman? The man?
    • Note: The serpent is a picture of Satan. God said that the son of the woman would crush his head.
    • From what did God make clothes for Adam and Eve? What had to happen for God to make clothes from the skin of animals?
    • Did Adam and Eve die when they ate from the forbidden tree? How?
  2. What do we learn about God from this story?
  3. What do we learn about people from this story?
  4. What do we need to obey from this story (what do we need to do)?

How this Story Points to Christ

Both Adam & Eve disobeyed God’s command and ate from the tree from which he told them not to eat. God is holy and pure, and he must punish sin. The punishment for sin is eternal death (spiritual death). That is why God made Adam and Eve leave the garden. They were ashamed and grieved deeply because the beautiful and wonderful relationship which they had with God was broken. From that time, they were eternally separated from God.

Like Adam and Eve, all people from that time sin because they didn’t listen and obey God’s command, and all of us are separated from God. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. And the wage of sin is eternal death.

However, God loves man and before removing man from his presence, he did two things:

  1. He cursed the serpent and said, “The descendant of the woman will crush your head.”
  2. God made clothes from them from the skin of an animal. This was the first animal to die to cover man’s sin.

And the birth of Christ shows us that He is the One who came to defeat Satan. Jesus has the divine sign of being born of a virgin. The Christ is the only one born of a virgin. God used this miracle as a sign to show us that the Christ would defeat Satan. Jesus is the son of the woman. The Christ is the one who was born to crush Satan’s head.

Respond

Stop and think about the life of Adam and Eve.  Ask God to show you what he wants you to learn.  The Bible says, “The wages of sin is death.”  How do we know this from the life of Adam?  Think about this and listen to the following spiritual song.  Then, listen again to the story, and ask God what he wants you to discover from it.

God wants to have a relationship with you and those around you. Think about friends or family members whom you trust and who are interested in learning more about the ancient prophets.  Invite them to do this study with you.
